In this article it will provide a step-by-step guild on how to connect to an external HANA system from HANA studio. So that Project Shark HANADB on BW will connect to Project Clam HANA_SHR. Actually it has the ability to connect to all sort of data sources such as Oracle, SQL Server, Hadoop big data, etc as long as the client drivers are in place with the HANA DB server.

For better usage, we have defined an entry within Shark HANADB /etc/hosts file to point to ClamHDB, configuration see below

1). after login HANA studio, i only see HDB(SHARK), don't have HDB(SYSTEM) HANA Database. Is it ok?
2). I try to add new remote source under HDB(SHARK) Porovisioning, but it complained 'Not authorized', can you pls advice what may cause this error?

Hi meiping,

This is because of lack of authorization of the target Hana SHR instance, since the DDIC is an user of SAP system, but not a DB user of HANA

To be able to have full access of HANA you'll have to join the BI team and have your ID created by the team leader David

Or, actually you can find a way to connect to any remote databases, such as your own SQL server instance in your VM. The HANA Smart Data Access is nothing new but just a method connecting to remote databases, via JDBC or ODBC. After that you can define any HANA virtual tables pointing to external DB's tables
